After a Natural Sciences Tripos at Cambridge followed by rotation through Heamatology, Histopathology, Biochemistry, Blood Transfusion and Bacteriology at the John Bonnet Clinical Laboratories of Addenbrooke’s Hospital, a move to The Babraham Institute started a lifelong career in biomedical research within which histopathology has played a major role. A six year position with Ciba-Geigy built knowledge around the commercial and industrial aspects of biomedical research after which a return to academia in the Department of Paediatric Surgery at GOS widened research remits and experiences. This was followed by 5 years at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital as Senior Research Fellow in histopathology and then recruitment to Northwick Park Institute of Medical Research (NPIMR) in 1994 and appointment to Director of NPIMR in 2004. Major biomedical interests are tissue engineering within regenerative medicine, novel assessment of tissue scaffolds and post implantation integration together with cellular manipulation for re-population of decellularised natural tissue scaffolds.

Experience in pharmaceutical company ABPI qualified and also in industrial food related microbiology.
